Darrel Martin wrote about a similar fly made with deer hair. He attributed it to the Cherokees. He even created a tool to cut the hide into a strip. More about the yallerhammer:

The latest issue of FF&FT has a review of Whiting BBBB Greenwell hen capes. The reviewer writes that while there are some Greenwell fly size feathers; most of the other feathers are too large.
