Re: Hook for the Red Hackle?

Bill, in my opinion (and it is not a terribly valued one!) the dyed version seems to loose some of its appeal. It does not seem as iridescent as standard Peacock herl, which may indeed be one of the "X" factor qualities that makes herl such a popular fly tying material from the days before...

Re: Your Most Productive flies in 2015

Hands down number one for me would be the hot butt purple & Starling for me. http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i463/Matauramayfly/2014-2015%20Season/2014-12-01115548_zps57683f7d.jpg A close second would be my variation of Mark Libertones Lil Dorothy. http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i463/Ma...

Re: Hook for the Red Hackle?

At a glance, Bill's link looks to be "proper" bronze Peacock herl. By that, I mean genetic mutation herl, not dyed or sun bleached green herl (that I have seen trying to be sold/passed off as bronze herl before!) The bronze Peacock is a genetic mutation of the green Peafowl, so will possib...

Re: Hook for the Red Hackle?

I may have lucked out on a bad bunch, but last time I was in Northern Ireland, I bought some of the Osprey hooks and bought them home before I used them. Now, as a display hook to tie on, brilliant. As a fishing hook for NZ size trout...... bloody terrible! The few hundred I got were either not temp...

That is a neat wee pattern, one that would take fish pretty much anywhere in the World that trout live.

Re: Soft hackle emerger for swap

If it were me, I would fish it as is....... but possibly more as a drowned crippled emerger than one that is going to sit just in the surface film. I could be completely wrong, but with the size and weight of the hook and material choices, I feel that particular model may tend to sink more than just...

Re: Cowdung question

And if one cannot find Chukar wings, one might be able to find Red Legged Partridge wings. ;) Bill, that comparison photo is a revelation. Never having had a Landrail wing I did not realise just how close the Chukar wing is as a sub. I doubt many tiers could pick the difference on a tied fly- let al...

I'm a bit bias, he is a Kiwi and the guy responsible for "Once in a Blue Moon" and other DVD's as well as the Epic fibreglass fly rod range. This series of videos https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAFFE1BA2E6932540 whilst not showing perhaps the exact description of Tom's explanation ...

Re: Leisenring's Tups Nymph

Chris, all very subjective and of my own ideals...... but...... To me, primrose is a pale straw/lemon yellow, or very "washed out" yellow. In silk it is almost a translucent yellow.... if that makes sense? I was going to suggest Guettermann or Kinkame as a sub for the buttonhole and it loo...

Re: Ideas for thread and other spooled stuff storage

Hank, now I'm not suggesting you rush out and buy one of these http://www.walmart.com/ip/Excel-26-inch-Tool-Chest-with-Six-Ball-Bearing-Slide-Drawers/45301004 but it is more of a suggestion on the type of thing you might look out for on the second-hand, yard sale, ebay type market. Not just for thre...
