Re: Starling & Red Soft Hackle

Ken Although I don't take my own advice, I've often told beginning fly tiers that if they wanted to tie effective soft hackles in many colors, sizes, etc. they only needed two bird skins ---- starling and partridge. Needless to say, I yet to heed my own advice which, if I did, my bank account would ...

Re: Finicky grayling

Although there's no grayling in my part of the world, I'm a big fan of any Frank Sawyer dressing, or variations thereof, including Sawyer's "Killer Big." that he developed for Grayling fishing. Phil Anderson has done a fantastic job of researching materials used in tying a modern version o...

A No-Name / New Nymph

Years ago, a friend used an old Ligas dubbing called "Black Drake" that has long been discontinued. I found out that the Black Drake dubbing was made from nothing except "Aunt Lydia's Fuzzy Gray Sparkle Yarn", so I got the yarn , cut and mixed it, then sent it to the guy who had ...

Yeller Soft Hackles

Tied these yesterday and couldn't decide which pic I liked better, so here's two pics. Turmeric-dyed, white hen hackles, with a light yellow (primrose colored ?) Danville thread and a pale yellow (primrose color - again) SLF dubbing to make a few "Yeller Soft Hackles." Will soon tie a few ...

Re: Leisenring Hares ear and Woodcock.

If I could tie a decent winged wet fly, that would be one of them. VERY nice dressing.

Re: Hemorrhoidal Hares Ear

One of my most productive flies is my version variation of the Red Ass soft hackle, tied with a red thread butt, peacock herl body with a gold wire rib and a partridge hackle. Using a lime green thread instead of the red, makes my version of an Egg Laying Caddis soft hackle. GREAT when fished in tan...

Waterhen Bloa Dry Fly

This might be upsetting to some, but I recently saw this Davie McPhail video and thought it to be an interesting twist to tying dry fly versions of some of the North Country Spiders.
