Re: H,C. Cutcliffe Flies
Thank you for a great post. I have read that Cutcliffe preferred game cock hackles for his flies and lamented that these birds were no longer being bred as a result of a prohibition on cock fighting. The sport was also later outlawed in the US. Consequently game cock feathers disappeared from commer...

Re: Sharpes of Aberdeen Cane Rod Blanks
Bob. Are you at liberty to mention the name and contact information for the US rod builder? Also, what is the approximate cost pèr blank? If you are unable or uncomfortable answering these questions, I understand and won’t be offended.

Re: Mindlin and Rosenman silk
Have not tied with it yet. Need to respool it onto smaller spools. It’s comparable to pearsall’s in diameter. Very shiny. The spools were each wrapped in old newsprint to preserve the color I suppose. One of the pieces of newspaper had a date of 1933. May have been in storage since the FDR administr...

Re: A necessary staple.
I'm a born scavenger, so I like the air rifle approach. I'm also big on roadkill, and found a fresh coot last year near Coburn (Penn's Creek). When you say "dun starling" I suppose you mean the young birds just out of the nest.

Re: A necessary staple.
The hackle is furnace hen that I purchased from Great Feathers in Maryland. I believe Edmonds and Lee follow the original Greenwell's Glory pattern and use hen blackbird wings, which are now impossible to find. Starling makes a good substitute. The Robert Smith book is a treasure trove of north coun...

Re: A necessary staple.
Coming out of the shadows to say that I like the Greenwell as well as the next guy, and fished it with good success this spring on Honey Creek in Central Pennsylvania where I have a little place in the hills, probably not so far from Smuggler. This pattern was very effective during the American gran...
