Re: Dark Special
I'm enjoying the discussion, too. When I bought a Greenwell's hackle, I called it that because that's what the seller called it. It looked a lot like a furnace hackle to me, but what do I know?

Re: Bird's Carey
Interesting information about a classic northwest pattern. I have had very good fishing with a version tied with a peacock herl body, and also with a red Carey, tied with SLF dubbing for the body.

Re: Swinging flies during a hatch
I had pretty good results swinging a Little Dorothy just below the surface during a pale morning dun hatch on the Lochsa River in mid-October, fwiw. Using what kind of presentation and methods John? Upstream, across & down on the swing? Sort or long leader? :D I was fishing across and slightly ...

Re: M'ole Grey Hen
You're welcome, Izaak. And Wayne, you have some mad tying skilz on those tiny flies. An 18 is about all I can manage, and nowhere near as well as you. (I guess I have decided to resume posting, at least for a while.)

About the 2:10 mark and onward, Davie McPhail demonstrates the technique referenced above:

Re: 77022 Softies Series
Those are some really nice-looking flies. I have not had the chance to play around with my Clark block much yet, but one of my goals this fall/winter is to experiment with the technique.
I use a thrift store coffee grinder to blend dubbing; works like a charm and only cost $2.

Re: Black gnat
Thanks fellas. I built a photo box, but I can see my focus was soft on this fly. Still working the bugs out.
