You can subitute hen pheasant feathers for many soft hackle patterns.
Our late friend Alan ( small stream reflections) did it all the time.

The title translates to Feather, Silk and Steel by Jose Luis Garcia Gonzalez. This book is in Spanish. Much history on early Spanish wetfly patterns. Great color photos of patterns and materials.
