ronr, Howdy;

Good casting practice ... gettin' the fly into the 8", 10" or 12" hole.
Size of hole dependent upon ice-fisher's optimism.

other than the libations essential to surviving ice fishing... I can't think of anything fun about that practice...

The ice fishing "shanties" they drag out onto the ice in states northern like Wisconsin and Minnesota are actually portable man caves, with stoves and cooking equipment, tables for playing cards and even generators and TVs. It's a big social deal that provides a measure of sanity and entertainment to help survive 5 months of snow and sub-freezing temps.

Sometimes they even catch fish, which I can tell you from personal experience taste really good pan fried after being caught through the ice in the middle of winter.
