I have had a real fondness for Bitch Creek and Girdle Bug variations since I got my copy of Montana Trout Flies by George Grant.

A couple of P. dorsata observations I made this Fall...

1) On my home waters they come in two colors, dark brown and black with whitish gills underneath the legs.

2) I captured and released over 3 dozen P. dorsata nymphs in the shallows this Fall. Every one of them after I gently set them back in the water flipped over on their backs and slowly sank to the bottom before flipping back over. They never squirmed or struggled as they sank.

I know they are clumsy, but they dead drifted as they sank to the bottom. No movement at all was my observation. So that is how I now fish them.

I don't add a lot of weight to the actual pattern. I prefer to add weight to the leader if needed.

So how do you guys present these big boys?

John, i use them as an attractor in a three nymph set up.

I too use weights on the leader to get the rig down. That being said, i do add lead wire to some of the patterns.

Black thread is used for the weighted nymphs, Brown for the unweighted Stones.

Dubbn, don't you also have the Pteronarcys californica nymphs (Giant Salmonfly)?
