Melted Cased Caddis

Hook - Mustad 3906B or equivalent
Weight - Lead free wire (Optional)
Thread - Chartreuse and black
Case - Root beer pearl chenille or crystal chenille
Legs - Black hackle fibers
Head - Chartreuse and black thread
UV Resin

Tying Note

The chenille is tied on at the hook bend, then wrapped forward and tied off. Cut off thread. The chenille is then melted using a lighter or other flame to create the case. Reattach tying thread and finish the fly.

Good example there.

Experimenting with different colored Crystal Chenille one can get fairly close to mimicking the color of most river substrates.

For example, one strand of Orange and one of Pink came very close to duplicating the sand on the lower Fryingpan and Roaring Fork Rivers here in Western Colorado.

How quickly the chenille is melted seemed to have an effect on how light or dark the pattern turned out. That may be due to operator error on my part.
