Checking my journals and my fly box I realized I was out of Ice Breakers.

According to my journal it is the best Winter early Spring Soft Hackle I use. I tied a few up for my float tomorrow.

Brilliant design, Wayne. I need to add some of these to my box.

Those are nice!
Is that a hollow stretch tube with wire inserted A la John Collins?
I love the endless combinations achievable with that technique.

Our rivers are loaded with slush and shelf ice the last few days
so the boat will remain in the garage
And thanks for that fluffy lake effect stuff you sent Ray.

Have a safe float tomorrow, Wayne.

Interesting.

Good looking flies, that would appear to be PMD or Yellow Sally imitations. It wouldn't have occured to me to fish them in cold weather.

At this time of year I am sure they are merely attractors.

DUBBN,

Would you be willing to share the actual list of materials you used for this pattern? When I searched for "Ice Breaker Fly Pattern", the fly in the video looked nothing like your picture.

Thanks- Ken

The recipe I followed to tye this pattern came from Charlie Cravens website close to 15 years ago. Sadly, when he changed servers, the Icebreaker was left out.
His pattern as well as the patterns I googled today use a Silver bead as the thorax of the fly. I have never tyed it with a bead. Also, I am now using CDL for the tail instead of Partridge.

Hook - WFC nymph hook or Mustad 3906B size 14 to 18. The original calls for the TMC 200R
Thread/Underbody- UTC 70 , White
Collar - Dun Hen
Tail - CDL
Abdomen - Tan Midge Tubing with chartreuse or gold core.
Thorax - Olive Ice Dubbing
Head - Red thread or use a Red Sharpie to color the White thread.
Use a Black or dark Brown sharpie the color the top of the abdomen. Which I forgot to do on the flies pictured.

I appreciate the list of materials and the background info for this fly. Note to self: add tan midge tubing to list of materials to order.

Thanks- Ken
