Bob.. I also like the Mallard for soft hackles...the feathers are supple and the rachis are strong, but not too stiff .... like the color too.

I also have a fondness for using waterfowl wings for tying soft hackles. I use Teal and Wood duck wings ( smaller feathers for smaller flies) and I incorporate a very small tuft of CDC in place of the Zelon. Just another variation on a theme.
