I've tried a few of those techniques, including a hand furl with just the fingers. What produced the best and tightest snoods was a "Walton's Engine". It looks very similar to your machine except it was made of brass.

Ron,
I needed to look up a "Watson's Engine". There was one listed on the Eclectic Angler website.
Tomorrow I can add a photo of my set up with the Bradshaw.

The photo how I attach a drill to a wooden form that rides on a 2" X 6" rail. The rail is attached to saw horse legs. The picture also shows the remote control device.

Good stuff Ray.
In Darrel Martins book titled MICROPATTERNS TYING AND FISHING THE SMALL FLY there is some good info. on tools as well as making furled leaders.
Good luck,
Lou

Lou - Thanks for the tip. I already have that book, so I will check it out. Darrel’s books are terrific sources of information.
Bill - Wow! I had no idea that there were so many different tools for making furled leaders. I’ve stumbled into a whole new rabbit hole. Fly fishing is full of these fascinating new worlds to explore. Always something new to learn, which keeps things fun.

Ray, Howdy;
Basically, you have a miniature rope walk. Here's one made from scratch;
and another more in scale for leaders
