Keel Flies

Keel - Red Squirrel

Hook - Mustad 79666 or Varivas 2410WB or *equivalent
Thread - Black
Body - Flat, oval or embossed gold/silver tinsel
Wing - Red squirrel tail

*Mustad 79666 or Varivas 2410WB are now extinct. I used a Belly Bumper hook from Kelly Galloup

The Classic Streamer Fly Box - Mike Valla

Bornholdt Golden Squirrel

Hook - Mustad 79666 or Varivas 2410WB or *equivalent
Thread - Black
Body - Flat gold tinsel
Hackle - Red
Wing - Red squirrel tail

Black over white painted eyes

That's too bad. I tied a lot of Mickey Finns on the 79666 back in the day for pickerel fishing.

I'm glad to know there's a substitute available.

Nice flies!

I think the most creative keel fly I have tied is Popovics' Schoolie

I’m always having issues with painted eyes running when I top coat them with clear.

Any ideas anyone?
