Sooty Peacock

Post by Ron Eagle Elk » Tue Dec 21, 2021 3:57 pm

Stole this pattern from Jack Harford on FB. It's been a while since I tied a winged fly so I dressed a few in anticipation of spring.
Hook: Mustad 3906B size 10, 12
Thread: Black
Tail: GO Tippet
Tag: 3 turns of copper wire (I used medium)
Rib: Copper wire (Again, medium)
Body: Peacock herl in a dubbing loop
Hackle: Jack used black hen, I used Jackdaw for that sooty gray color, waterhen or coot would look good too.
Wing: Bronze Mallard, folded and rolled.

Oh my, that looks supremely fishable! The copper tag/rib really enhances the pattern.

I'm not on FB (meta?), so thank you for sharing this variation here.

You might as well have named it 'Aroostook Peacock'. That pattern will produce, depending on size, all year long up here. Wonderful tying; I am soooo stealing this.
