Things you learn by accident.

Post by Fishnkilts » Fri Jan 27, 2023 10:32 pm

I accidently found a trick when using wild game bird feathers when getting the right hook gap size. I noticed that when I take a hook and placed it next to the stem of the feather to get my hook gap, it still came out narrow when tied on the shank. But if I place the hook to gap the wing near the tips of the barbs, it comes out better because for what I can see is, next to the stem of the feather, the barbs are thicker, but at the end of the barbs they are thin.
So when gapping the wings on the outside of the barbs, I get a fuller looking wing like this.

I just got a bunch of schlappen for making throats.

I'm on my way to becoming a better tyer!

Sorry. Post Image isn't working like it used to, so click on the link to see my fly. I hate technology.

Thank you Ray. I don't understand what I did wrong for the photo not to appear. And thank you for your kind words of encouragement.

I also learned not to gap the wing with a hook that has a beaked point. That will throw you off unless you go up two sizes of hook.
