Skues No.3 Blue Dun

Post by Updtate » Wed Dec 23, 2020 3:04 pm

Was reading Minor Tactics of the Chalk Stream by G. E. M. Skues. He states that the range of wet fly patterns is not extensive and lists 7 dressings that serve all practical purposes. Now I know how much time I have wasted on this subject over the years. This pattern is #3 the Blue Dun. I used a Daiichi 1480 size 16 for both flies very small as these hooks run small. Both have wings of Snipe ,the silk is Primrose and the Hackle is medium blue hen. The fly on the left is dubbed with water rat. I subbed pine squirrel an acceptable sub. On the right the body is Heron Herl with a fine gold wire spiraled through it. Only 6 more patterns to go and I will be set for life.

I’m looking forward to the whole series Tom. Wonderful pair of flies. I especially love the heron herl body.

Well done. They both look awesome. I can't wait to see the rest that you come up with.

Those are very nice call and they would cover so many different insects in our neck of the woods.
Keep up the good work Tom :)
