Kimono silk now for the fly fisher

Post by Old Hat » Sat May 11, 2024 7:46 pm

Just an FYI,
My friend at Magpie Materials has worked out a deal with Superior Threads and is now offering Kimono Silk spooled on standard size tying spools. The price is very reasonable. He is carrying most of the colors that match up with Pearsall’s and a few new colors. https://magpiematerials.com/
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

Hello. First post, but I've read a bit on the silk options. I'm curious if anyone has the closest Kimono color/number for Pearsall's #13 Crimson? Old Hat's photos have been fantastic to see actual comparisons, but most internet photos of the Kimono line are pretty poor. Thanks.

Evidently, at this point, neither Kimono nor (per Robert L. Smith) YLI have a good match.

Try Kimono's #320 as a sub for crimson. It's pretty darn close!!

Let's face it, close was about as good as Pearsall ever got to their own colors. ;)

It does look close, I intend to grab a spool.

Thanks!

You are right about the Pearsall dye lots.

I use Classic Chestnut to wrap guides on the bamboo rods I make and I have a good stash of that color. The difference in dye lots becomes readily apparent when the spools are exposed to sunlight. :o Even so, the trout don't seem to care. :D

Carl,
This is good news indeed! I'm glad you brought this info to us!
