I was at my local archery club weekly indoor shoot and lo and behold one of the members showed up with a twelve week old English Spaniel. What makes this more rare is that in California you cannot legally purchase a though breed dog. He is a lovely colour and he’s agreed to donate a little of his lovely soft coat!
Congratulations on finding a source for your "Lemon Spaniel" fur! :D I also wish you the best when you put all the materials
into your fly and look forward to seeing the results.

However, an Old English (aka Springer), Spaniel would be colored Liver and White not Lemon.

However a Cocker Spaniel would look more like this

Cockers come in a multitude of colors but the yellows (Buff), are the closest to the Lemon but that's just my opinion.

I also noticed the statement that I highlighted above and it struck me as odd, perhaps not so much for Cali. but odd none-the-less.
A quick Google to see what the law is only shows the Cali only recently prohibited the sale by retailers of non- rescue
puppies to kill the puppy mills. The sale of dogs however needs to be accompanied by a document from the breeder
with the particulars of the animal ie. breed, gender, dob, and that it is free of disease. So, a pedigreed dog should be a
normal purchase, even in Cali.

Excuse me if I may have come across as a bit harsh, but you appear to be a person that is picky about "correctness"
in the things that concern you and I thought you might appreciate the 'correct" information instead of incorrect being
put out.

Cheers,

hank

I’m disappointed to the introduction of politics have been introduced to the forum, maybe my fault to my reference to the
Dog laws here in California
Being a Brit and a ex owner of a Springer Spaniel I’m well aware of the colour being Liver and not Lemon, however the young puppies are generally a lighter colour than the adults. If you look at the photos of samples of the original dubbing you can see some darker materials there, so I’m guessing this could be the Spaniel. Either way when I have some dubbing finished I shall publish the results

If it passes the "Duck Test" then why not use it. No need for a DNA test.

I thought I had the correct Spaniel fur, but I find out there is indeed a lemon colored Springer Spaniel what I have is Liver. Lemon, althoughits a old color, is considered to be a bad colour by the akc now I am having to carry on searching for some Lemon fur, but I’m thinking that a little peroxide on the liver fur that I have might make it lemon. But I really don’t see the need for it since the Rams wool has a lot of lemon colour in it. You opinions would be welcomed

Bazzer69, Howdy;

Thinking you might find some fur approximating what you are looking for.

Only a suggestion.

Project nearly complete!

I have now successfully mixed some Tups Dubbing as revealed to be Austen’s original recipe ie Rams Tups Wool, Baby Seals fur and Lemon Dog fur.
I belended the materials using a carding board the I made ( it’s a great way of blending dubbing) until the proportions looked as close to the photo of some original dubbing bearing in mind it likely faded after so many years. I was hoping to find a original Tups fly or even better some dubbing, but alas I haven’t found either. So mine is likely to vary a little from the original.
I’m sending out some packets of my dubbing to a couple of people who have helped me a lot with soft hackle materials. So having a little excess to my personal requirements I offering a few smaller samples to anyone who would like some. Just pm with your address and you will get some. This is limited to what I have so it will be around the first half a dozen. There will be enough to tie at least a dozen flies.
Thanks
Barry
