I don’t know if this is the correct place to post this:
Over the last year or two, I’ve spoken with Ivan at great length regarding silk and soft hackles. So he sent me this bobbin he came across- it is a work of art! Has anyone else ever seen one of these?

Wow, what a cool bobbin. Ivan has given you a wonderful gift. You should somehow capture the lineage/provenance of the tool inside the case. Definitely a piece of fly tying history.

Now you need to tye some flies with it, and post the results. I'm sure Ivan would love to hear you were putting this bobbin to good use.

I love the little O-ring on the neck of the bobbin. I believe the O-ring is used to secure the tag end of the silk, when the bobbin is not being used.

When you are done using the bobbin, simply slide the ring off the end. Pull the tag end of the silk down along the barrel of the bobbin, and then slide the O-ring back over the end. This will trap the silk and hold it neatly in place, between tying sessions.

So cool!

I would use the o-ring to press the hackle back when tying off and laquering. That is how i do it until I lose them.

Yup, I have a blue one. They auction them off at the Sow Bug every year.

Only the width dimension matters and this bobbin holder appears to be adjustable in that respect.

This is from "Wayne Moore's Fly Tying Tips". He started making them in the early 1940's.

This is such a cool bobbin! The cream comes to the surface in this craft as well as others! It is a true pleasure looking at it! I can't imagine owning it as well!
Wonderful artwork Dana! Thank you so very much for posting it! It is gorgeous!
