Make friends with your local dog trainer. Young dogs catch birds occasionally during training sessions and birds are often shot when breaking dogs to retrieve.
Attend a local field trial and help out. Offer to buy leftover birds.
Quail, chukar. and even pheasant can be obtained.
Always ask the pros and trial people where they get their birds. A place near us will even skin your pheasant
On a warm September day, the trial wrangler left, saying it was too hot for his horses, leaving the judges horseless. I loaned them my 2 horses for the last 2 hours or so, and they gave me their leftove birds, two dozen quail and a pheasant.
