Did I find a spool of the Pearsall's Gossamer unicorn (Sherry Spinner 6b)?

It's always difficult to tell from a screen but I would say number 6A; light orange and not 6B; sherry spinner. I don't think you find 6B on a plastic spool, I guess they are all on wooden spools. I compared this photo with my reference collection. Call it an educated guess. 6B is richer/fuller/darker.

DD,

I''m 100% sure it's not 6a (light orange or gold). A spool of 6a came in this small batch I bought and I already have several spools of 6a for comparison. Look here and you will see 6b (Sherry Spinner) on a plastic spool:

When I hold this spool next to the picture in the chart from Phil Anderson, it looks spot on. I believe my birthday came 7 weeks early!

My bad eye can't tell what it is. My good eye seems to think it's closer to Java Brown, but on a computer screen, it's hard to tell.

FlyFisherMann1955, Howdy;

Not truly sure. Looks on my monitor (did a split screen), doing a side by side very close to your 6B.
However it was danged close to the 36 Classic Chestnut too. On the link you referenced each
spool had a hook with some turns of each color in two parts. One dry the other wet. Perhaps if
you were to do the same and set it in front of the spool we may be better able to render a better
opinion. Hope you're right, would be nice to see a photo of a unicorn.

Bill,

Unfortunately, Goldenwitch doesn't show Sherry Spinner as a color you can order.

Ron,

I have Java Brown, so I know this spool isn't Java Brown.

Tom,

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Too bad Pearsall's didn't label their spools!

I wrap the guides on my bamboo rods with Classic Chestnut & I think that is the color you posted. IIRC the Sherry Spinner is slightly darker in color. It's difficult to tell them apart without having the spools in hand. Wish it was the Sherry Spinner. THAT would be a nice find.

Ken,
It's difficult to decide whether that is No.6B without seeing it side-by-side with known comparisons. Perhaps this photo will help you decide...

Sherry Spinner is a bit darker and a bit more orange than Classic Chestnut. It's a close call, but your spool looks to me more like Classic Chestnut. Classic Chestnut was also widely available in fly tying and rod building shops, whereas Sherry Spinner was not.

Check out the dry-wet colors of both in that color chart above. Even the most highly educated trout couldn't tell a difference!

Cheers,
Phil
