Devil’s Advocate and Morus Silk

$8.50 + shipping for a substitute Pearsall’s. No thank you.

Pearsall’s was around $5-6 a spool for a 49 yard spool of silk thread from a historic company before discontinuing.

Morus silk is not Pearsall’s silk. Colors may be close (even Pearsall’s colors varied slightly), but it is not silk from a historic company. Now they want almost 1.5-2x the cost of the original.

I could see that price increase for the limited Pearsall’s. That is understandable. Not for a substitute though.

Ephemera offers 100 yards/spool (2x the amount of Morus)
YLI offers 210 yards/spool (4x the amount of Morus)
Kimono offers 220 yard spools (4x the amount of Morus)

All in the $5 - $6 dollar range.
220 yards of Kimono $5.85.
200 yards of Morus for $35.00.

Fish don’t care at all if your silk shade is slightly off. Fish don’t care what silk you use. Fish probably don’t care if you use silk or not. Only tiers care and we care because we like tying historical patterns with historically used silk. Morus silk is not historically used silk and not worth the money they are asking.

Although it sure is pretty and a much nicer base for building dubbing ropes on. :D

Absolutely agree.

When I saw it on Facebook being advertised I checked out the link and when I saw the price I laughed.

It’s nothing more than a Pearsalls knock-off at a rip-off price.

I don’t know how they can justify those prices other than exciting those tying material hounds who can’t see the feathers for the capes.

If the demand is low they may go the same way as Pearsall's or have to reduce their pricing. I would guess their target market is not the US or AU or the flymph guys here.

As far as opinions go, everyone has one (especially on flymph forum), but only the trout's vote counts. Unless you tie flies for sale.

I have found in my humble opinion, I like YLI's silk thread and spun bodies made on my W. Anderson's Clark dubbing block. I am sure the truttas will agree. I have no intention of buying Morus thread, but I do not fault anyone who buys their thread.

I agree. The YLI & Kimono threads are excellent & a good value for us flymphers.

I admit to trying the 54 Dean Street and have a small order of Morus on the way as a color test. I'm in the process of doing an unwaxed, waxed, cobbler's wax with a wet/dry look on 54 Dean Street and Morus to compare to Pearsall's. The finish quality of the 54 Dean Street I have isn't even close to Pearsall's.

...almost bought the 54 Dean silks - had it in my hands, but the crummy spools, and poor thread finish turned me off.Over the years I have purchased many MANY spools of Clover, Gutterman, Belding etc....... for flymphs, would rather have the original...

Good, so I'm not the only one who didn't like the course wood spools of 54 Dean Street. I also found the thread lacked the fine finish and sheen of the Pearsall's It appeared "lifeless" if that makes sense.
