Rabbit Dubbing

Post by joaniebo » Sun Jan 26, 2020 10:12 am

Awhile back, I saw a few old dressings that called for dyed rabbit fur and / or a mixture of rabbit fur with another material. I didn't find too many places that sold dyed rabbit dubbings, so I bought a bunch of various colored rabbit zonker strips, cut the fur off the strips and then blended them in my old coffee grinder. Made some very, soft and spiky dubbings.

Many / most of you probably already knew this, but it took this Old Bohemian quite a few years before I realized that zonker strips make nice dubbings.

I am always amazed at how often I find Zonker Strips in a clearance bin. You are correct, it makes a great dubbing.

Shop craft stores, they often have rabbit skins in different colors at reasonable prices. I buy white ones when I see them to dye and blend. Rabbit also makes a good binder to mix with other furs.

Or if you had a pet rabbit you could clean his cage with a dustbuster and make Droopy dubbing...

Whitetail (Whitetailflytieng.com) has a big selection. He kind of specializes in it.

Caucci and Nastasi came up with a spectrumized rabbit dubbing that is a great pre-mixed blend.
The colors cover almost everything and it's easy to hand card or mix with other furs like Roadkill mentioned.
It's fun to blend your own stuff but this is fast and simple when you are looking for small batch quantities.
