Orvis Flymphs

Post by gingerdun » Wed Jan 09, 2013 11:01 pm

Hello friends,
Our colleague John Shaner kindly loaned me this set of Orvis flymphs.
These were beautifully produced shortly after the 1971 reissue of THE ART OF TYING THE WET FLY AND FISHING THE FLYMPH.
Pete Hidy was the supervisor of the project, obviously.
My father had a set, but the bugs ate them. The hooks are mostly bare, so I was thrilled that John could come to the rescue.
Wouldn't have happened without this wonderful forum.

Please accept my apologies for my temporary reduced participation in the forum.
I'm trying to check in every day, but am not able to do much more for a while.

But the key word is "temporary." When things settle down here, I will be back more.

Lance, that is a really neat set of classics.
Thank you for sharing them with us and thanks also to John for making it happen.

I really appreciate seeing sets like this, most of the patterns are unusual here so I do not get to see them and they give me a visual idea of the shape and form better than many of the patterns listed in older books.

Lance - I remember you telling me of your fathers set beeing destroyed. Major kudos to John, for letting you photograph this set. Thank you for sharing this new glimps of the book with us. Another example of why the revised edition is going to be a must-have book.

Lance,

Very nice story, legacy, and set of flies.

Very good, also, for John S. to come through.

Wishing you good progress on your work!

Best,

Tim

I even see a Tup's in there. :D

Lance, thanks so much for sharing your images and John, what a pleasure it is to have seen these and much thanks for sharing them. I love this pic. Although they were not tied by Hidy, his supervision is clearly evident.

So nice to see these as a complete set. Each in it's rightful place. :D :D

Lance, (& John)--

I recently found a set of these, after looking for some time now:

Do you know who tied these?

On the Bamboo boards the folks have helped narrow down production date: the flymph selection only appeared in the 1973 and 1974 catalogues. It's not in 1971 or 1972 or 1975. Here's an image from the 1974 catalogue:
