Another good read, though not in the Pantheon like Hills book, is "Chalkstream chronicle" by Neil Patterson. When I was a teenager, way back in the mists of time (a child of state department wonks), I was able to get a moment on the Avon. It wasn't the Test, but I didn't care; it was the home water for Sawyer and Kite. That was enough for me.
