Try before you buy Wayne. I really like longer rods but we had a nine foot here and it wasn't enjoyable enough to find it if it was going to be fatiguing. Seriously it was the least enjoyable rod I have ever known in my whole life. It became either a 6 or 6 1/2 foot 4wt that my husband uses. It's OK for him, he likes it, but I still wouldn't say it's enjoyable. 8' for 5 wt is my favourite in the larger rods. My 3wt is about 7'3" which seems perfect. I want to build a 7' 2 wt.

Oh and thanks Mark. I have a poet's heart in a sailor's brain!! :lol:

Mark: I guess 23yrs as a troubleshooter in a technical field has marked me LOL!

Vicki: I'm going to make the blank myself, already have the bamboo culms in my garage waiting to be split.

I'm leaning heavy towards a Leonard 8 1/2ft, 3pc, 5wt taper. If it's too heavy, I'll build a second that's hollow built.

I'm also going to build a Payne Canadian Canoe taper, 8 1/2ft, 3pc, 7wt as a bass rod. I cast one and really liekd it!

Hi Wayne,

Does the taper have a name? All the Leonard tapers in the book of Ray Gould have a name and I don't see a tapering 8 1/2 foot 5 wt.

Do you know if your rod is fast or slow. I think the feeling of heavinis is not because of the too much bamboo in the rod but more by the leverage of the rod and a few gram more or less does not matter.

Succes with the planing

Hi Ruard;

It's a Leonard Model 50 1/2 Tournament 8.5 Ft 5 Wt.

I'm assuming it's very similar to the Leonard 50DH, 8ft. 5wt. The taper is listed at David Ray's Taper library:
http://www.hexrod.net/Tapers/drtapers/L ... 102_5.html

Here's the link to Hexrod listing: http://www.hexrod.net/Hexrod/hexrod-c.pl

The stress curve is very similar to Leonard's 50DH which I've already cast and love, just want something a little longer.

I have a feeling you might like the hollow built. Call it woman's intuition. I could be wrong though. 8-)

Enjoy every moment! Even the tough ones, it'll make it oh so much sweeter later. :D
