Loop Rods and Horse Hair Lines

Post by Ron Eagle Elk » Mon May 04, 2009 9:37 pm

Met Darrel Martin, author of "The Fly Fisher's Craft" at the Central Washington Fly Fishing and Tying Expo. He was showing his ash loop rod and demonstrating making horse hair lines and leaders. During dinner we exchanged information and found out we only live a short distance apart. I hope to be able to pick his brain a bit about fishing these old tools. Will keep you posted.

Please do. I became quite interested in loop rods before I branched off towards tenkara (which I think of as being a loop rod made with modern materials). I never got to the point of making a wooden rod, but did play around with horsehair lines. Making one isn't hard, but it is time consuming, especially whipping the tag ends of the knots. I will be very interested to hear of your experiences if you make and fish one.
