Generic Soft Hackle - Grey Pearsalls (9A)

Post by newriverspey » Thu Jan 26, 2023 7:38 pm

Hi all,

I decided to tie some soft hackle flies with the Grey Pearsalls that I found in Tokyo. The shop owner gave me a few partridge feathers and for dubbing I used some material from my sweater. The things you do when you really want to tie. Very simple fly that hopefully works for me in the next month.

Hook - TMC 102 Y #17
Body - Grey Pearsalls Silk (9A)
Thorax - Patagonia Sweater material

Wait, go back to that part where you said, "Next month..." Where are you fishing in February, and will you post pics, please!

...so much snow, so much cabin fever.

I know you are suffering from normal fly tying experience over there in the far east. We'll hold down the fort until you return, and in the meantime, keep visiting those fly shops and get more stuff to teach us.
PS... I'm demonstrating your Coachman Variant at the Winter Fly Tying session for the Central Oregon FlyFishers on 1/31. I'll give you a little report on how it goes next week.

I have never seen a fly photo from the butt end of the fly before. That was a first for me and not sure how to take it, but i will adapt to it.

I think it's a great looking fly. Sweater material? Good thinking!

This is a terrible thing to say, but here it comes; that fly is too nice to fish! It should just be admired. It's simple; the proportions are perfect; the hackle is textbook. I love the view from the back. It looks like a picture Tom or Carl would post and the bar doesn't get any higher.

I will come back again and again to admire your work and dream about finding that fly's twin in my vise!

Tight Lines- Ken
