w-h, Howdy;

What I have for me and Rascal is a 2008 30' 5th wheel that I pull with a 2004 Ford F-250 4X4 with a super cab and 8' bed. Has a 6.0L diesel.
For winter I have to "skirt" it (even with a Polar Pkg.).
R values ain't that great, I don't care what the brochures say. :lol: Regardless, keeping the breezes from blowing around 'down unda" helps ALOT. :D
Yep, heading South this year the past 2 that went to -40 F and didn't get back above +10 for a month and a half were enough to convince me that Utah is only nice in the Winter if you can afford one of the Resorts. I can't :( , so I'll migrate with the rest of the "Snowbirds".

I have a ton of Danville Flymaster threads. But the past several months I use more UTC 140 denier than anything else. I love Bennichi now, and have started using it for smaller flies, and flies that need a smaller head. I used to break even the flat waxed nylon thread when I first started out. So it is a big step for me to be able to use Bennichi, without too much breakage. The UTC 140 for some reason works good for me, and it is easier to see when it is flattened. I know others don't like it as much, but I have black, and white thread in that 140 denier, and I just love it. If I must use a color, I have a ton of colors in Flymaster thread. I used to particularly like the Flymaster Plus, because I was less likely to break it. The Bennichi thread is expensive though. But it should last you a while.

I'm a little late to the party on this one...

Silk: I use Pearsall's gossamer for some of my tying, but normally just when I'm using thread bodies or when ribbing with silk.

Benecchi 12/0: Best thread going IMHO. Has a good balance between strength and the ability to lay flat. Stronger than 8/0 uni. Great colour range

Griffith's Shear 14/0: A passable micro-thread, but has some QC problems with spooling. One of the few micro threads you can find in ginger.

Danvilles 6/0: Best colour range and lies nice and flat (economical too). A bit too thick for the small flies.

Uni 8/0: Production tying thread that I use in many of my competition flies. Cheap like borscht (made in Canada). Relatively strong. Great colour range. Doesn't untwist well--fibres are partially fused for strength.

Uni 17/0: Super fine thread used only for sub #24 flies (at least by me). Lays flat. Only comes in white. Surprisingly strong considering the weight, but you need a gentle hand to tye with it.

UTC 70: Lays super flat and the only thread available in really fluorescent colours. Not particularly strong and frays easily, it still makes for super slim bodied flies.

Every thread has it's time and place, but the two that see the most use on my bench are the Benecchi and Uni 8/0 (followed closely by the UTC). One thread that I've played with, but haven't done any significant tying with is Moser's Powersilk (which isn't silk at all). It's hugely strong but not slippery like gelspun threads. I have friends that swear by it for fine bodied chironomids.

Aaron

PS Unwaxed is the only way to go imho. No chance of it drying and going powdery and it's totally unnecessary for holding the fibres together like in the bad old days.

This thread has strayed a bit, no problem, lots of good information being put out by some savey folks.
original question was;
