Ephemera make a silk thread and silk floss. I have only used the thread, not the floss. From what I have read it is thicker than Pearsall. I have been happy with it. Before finding out about other alternatives to Pearsall, I bought quite a bit of Ephemera, just in case they went out of business too. I have more than I will ever use, but glad of that.

From top to bottom, Ephemera Silk thread, Ephemera Silk floss, and Semperfli Silk thread.

Grossly, you can see that the Ephemera Floss is thicker than the two threads. But you can cord it up so that it is about the same size as the Semperfli Pure Silk thread, when tied on the hook.

On the left is the Semperfli Pure Silk and on the right is the Ephemera Floss corded up tightly. The Semperfli product looks like it has sparse dubbing on it (it doesn't!!). Of course, I wouldn't use the Ephemera Floss as a tying thread though. I'm no expert, but that's not really the purpose of Floss.

I personally like the appearance of YLI silk thread more than Ephemera thread.

Also, the Ephemera Floss spools have only 30m. The thread has 100m.

Thank you for raking the time to post the photos! Yes I've bought one spool of the semperfli pure silk and it does the same thing. It's quite thick and just has a cheap, "dusty" texture. It doesn't feel like silk at all but more like cheap cotton string. I normally love semperfli products and think the are worth the extra money but they really missed the mark here. The problem I facing now is trying to find somewhere to buy YLI or kimono. I've found some kits on easy that will come in "fall" color schemes or "summer" or whatever for people who sew but never any place where I can pick colors individually.

Oh wow....just realized I had already mentioned my dislike for the pure silk in my previous comment....THAT'S EMBARRASSING

Does anyone know if the smaller "non-cone" Kimono Silk spools fit standard bobbins? I know that the cone spools are too big.

Dale - Yes, they will fit in a standard bobbin. The Kimono silk spools are slightly larger than a spool of UNI Thread, but not so big to be a problem. The spool in the bobbin is Kimono. UNI Thread spool for reference.
