Plover & Yellow; Does the Hook Change the Look?

I didn't work last Monday and was able to spend some time at the tying desk. Did some experimenting with different hooks with this pattern.

Plover & Yellow
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer - Yellow (Lemon) #5
Abdomen: Thread (Tied flat from front to back)
Rib: Thread (Spun CCW to cord up then wrapped open spiral back to front)
Thorax: Peacock herl (6-8 turns)
Hackle: Golden plover (2 turns)
Head cement - Orvis (water base)

These are the size 12 hooks I used (left to right)

Partridge Wet Heavy Supreme (G3A/L)
Capt Hamilton Wet (L2A - Wide Gape)
Partridge Dry Fly Supreme L5A/UE
Daiichi Dry (1480) / 1X fine, 2X short
Partridge Spider (L3AS) / 2X fine, 1X short

Pick a favorite and let me know.

My first choice would be the Partridge Dry Fly Supreme because of the upturned eye. It has a classic look to it. Second would be the Partridge G3A/L.

All are very nice.

I don’t think it really matters.
The fly is the same.
It’s all personal preference as to choice of hook

FlyFisherMann1955, Howdy;

Think I'll second Johnno's comment.

Yeah I agree for classic patterns like that an up eye is definitely the way to go and I do like the partridge Supreme because it's short. With that said I have been tying some historic north country spider patterns on a firehole pupa hook that I got to play around with some kebari style flies and I REALLY like the way the old flies look on the modern hook.

My eyes get stuck looking at the plover... What a beautiful feather that is, huh?
As for hooks, I'm currently liking sproat bends the best, down eye too, so the first hook on the left (heavy Partridge wet) is what catches me .

I didn't even notice the one on the left on the green hackle pliers. What hook is that? I think spiders look great on straight ring eyes too. My go-to has been a mustad 3366 for quite a while but I just got a new model from diaachi in the mail yesterday. It's a straight eye, fine wire hook with a limerick bend. Should look really good but I've yet to try them. So I think either up eye or ring eye.

T-12,

The fly on the far right on the green clip is tied on:

Partridge Spider (L3AS) / 2X fine, 1X short

Tight Lines- Ken

They all look great but if I were a fish I’d grab the Partridge Supreme Dry first.

I love them all, nicely done. Hell, I love any hook that isn't a Tiemco 200R.
