Varnishing Over Waxed Thread Head

Leisenring and many others suggest varnishing over a well waxed thread head for a smooth finish with added security, as an alternative to a head of just waxed tying silk (which they say itself is sufficient)... My question is, doesn't the solvent thinner in the varnish undermine the sticking properties of the tying wax? In other words, wouldn't adding varnish to a waxed thread remove the benefits of having waxed the head before varnishing it? Better for a secure tie-off to do either (or even neither) but not both?

I had heard the wax inhibited the varnish penetrating. Don't know
