I've generally tyed these with well waxed crimson, or claret silk (my personal favorite), but never with black thread. The waxed claret gets very dark, but maintains a hint of inner color.

I love seeing the detail in your photos of these old flies. Remarkable how much more detail we can see, compared with the original book prints.
