Mottling?

I've started playing with a new (to me anyway) method of flymph body construction. It has been good for making mottled patterns in the bodies as opposed to a solid mix of colors. Still working on it but here is the basics.

Tied with a drop loop rope.

I add a small amount of dubbing to the hanging thread. Small fibered fine textured dubbing is best. Here I am using mole.

I then form the loop and slip in some stronger textured, longer fibered dubbing at a 90 degree angle to the thread. Here I have use hare's poll. Again, keeping it sparse. Very easy to get too much dubbing in the rope.

Spin the loop up and you see you get a nice banded rope of the two different dubbings.

A pretty neat mottled effect for the dubbing (think dubbed jasper silk) I still want to play with some color combinations and more material mixes.

Carl,

I love what you have done with the dubbing loop! I have mottled alternate turns of different dubbing twisted on the thread but never taken the step of adding the crossing dubbing. 8-)

A fly I picked up in Canada from Reg Denny in 1988, the 007 Dragon fly nymph made me a believer in variegated chenille. That mottling inspired me to me to tie my Variegated Golden Stone Flymph with dubbing.

Make sure you share your tie.

That is one cool looking fly Carl! The secret is in the dubbing technique for sure! You make it look so easy!
The finished look of the fly is pure "Old Hat"! Way to go! I am looking forward to the different combinations you talked about in your message above!
You are cutting edge my friend, cutting edge!
Doug

What a great looking fly Carl. I never thought of twisting 2 dubbing ropes together. Makes for a great looking, buggy, body. Thanks for sharing this concept.
