Mystery feather soft hackle 2.0

Post by newriverspey » Thu May 11, 2023 7:16 am

Hi all,

The weather is not cooperating and it has done nothing but rain, which has blown out most of the streams. I did find another feather but this time the mystery feather is not a mystery. It is from a Common Myna and this feather is a dark brown with a bit of mottling mixed in. I decided to follow a similar theme as the last fly but used a small amount of oval tinsel. Hopefully it stops raining soon.

Hook: Dohiku #16
Thread: Grey Pearsall's Gossamer Silk
Body: Grey Pearsall's Gossamer Silk
Rib 1: 1 barb from Common Myna feather
Rib 2: XS Lagartun Oval Tinsel
Hackle: Partridge

Beautiful dressing. Reminds me of the classic Atlantic Salmon flies on a much smaller scale. Great choice of colors and technique.

Mike,

Thanks and yes, my tying is very simple due to lack of materials but I am learning that perhaps I don't need as many materials to tie a nice fly.

Those are outstanding, Otto!
I can see the makings of an Isonychia Bicolor nymph with a feather barb to mimic
the pronounced gill tufts and satae on the naturals.
Well done.

otto, Howdy;

Sometimes, just keeping to the basics is truly the best way to go.

Hope the weather and stream conditions break in your favor soon.

Otto.. I've been trying to duplicate the bodies, rib, etc... do you know where on the bird that feather is coming from?
