Take two of these and two of these

Remove the heads of the pins and mount them in the pens. Magnetize one of the pins and use this pen to pick up the hook from the box when you are about to tie a fly. This is the easiest and quickest way I have found to do this. The other pin/pen is very handy to place that small drop of laquer needed on the head of the finished fly. I then clean the needle in a small sponge before putting the tool down...

If one bends the point of the pin it is easier to get just the right quantity of laquer. Trial and error needed - at least trial. You can skip the error altogether.

Allright - I try another way:

If the image doesn't show up, just take any mechanical pencil that can take the pin...

I use 0,7mm.

I have a strange question. Does anyone have magnetic scissors? I picked up a pair of fine, pointed scissors at Bass Pro that were sans packaging that say COZIC stainless Japan on them. One day when I picked them up from the tying table there was a hook stuck to them. I thought it was just stuck to the point and gave them a little shake but, no, it appears they are magnetic. Both interesting and annoying. Since they came without packaging I have no idea if they are supposed to be like this or if it's some strange accident. Maybe I should have kept this secret, got a patent and made millions of dollars, huh?

I suppose your scissors - with or without purpose - have been in contact with something magnetic. I used a "fridge magnet" to magnetize my pin. If you only want to pick one hook up, you don't want too much magnetized steel - hence the small pin.

There you are - just make millions of dollars and donate some of it to the site...

PS Leisenring used a knife. I use a scalpel to make these delicate cuts of fibers - both thread and feathers. I get better control that way than with scissors. DS

I do keep a razor blade that has one edge duct taped (to keep me from cutting myself) for really fine work but generally the small scissors are great because I can cut when I'm preparing the feather or use them like a scalpel when I am trimming the tips after wrapping or trimming off the thread when I've finished the whip. I find that when I'm tying I have a tendency to set things down and have to search to find them again so it's better if I don't have too many tools!

In any event, I've often wondered how many of the guys who never put down their scissors, in order to save what, 10 seconds per fly? still have both eyes.

Much too risky for me.
