I've been playing around with various flymph designs lately. One I was always drawn to was Loren Williams "Steelhead Pat," which uses two gamebird hackles, a smaller one at the beginning of the thorax and the larger one at the eye, separated by a dubbing brush thorax.

As you might expect, it looks a little wild and woolly in pictures:


But it compresses nicely in its natural habitat:


For myself, the two-hackle approach looks a bit more natural and organic than the standard flymph, and I find myself liking the shiny segmentation of the wire in the thorax as well.

PS. Almost forgot to ask, ....would it be feasiable or practical to use the same feather for both hackles. Like tying in by the tip for the abnomin (SP?), hackle then
sort of wind over it till it's where you need it for the coller hackle?

To answer Hank's question, I was using gamebird hackle where I had to use two different feathers, but if you were using genetic hen, you could no doubt get both wraps out of the same feather. I would do each hackle separately, though, clipping the feather off, then remount it for the forward-most hackle so it wouldn't get in the way of wrapping the dubbing brush.

Great looking fly. I've seen the double hackle before on steelhead flies but necessarily on flymph style. Some very nice effects could be created with different dubbing and hackle combinations.

Ya done good C.B. Loren is a good dude. i have a March Brown Emerger he tyed and gave me a few years ago.....i forget which show it was. He tyed for Team U.S.A. one year at the WFFC&CS.....it was the very next year after Leslie Wrixon was the tyer for Team U.S.A., '07 maybe. Really nice guy. Tyes great flies. You did a teriffic job with that fly, as you always do. It's a gorgeous tye. These kinna flies "work" so well on a hook like you used. And i dig your pics.

An understatement to be sure. I've never met the fellow, but hopefully his new website will ressurect some of his tutorials, if only to let y'all see what his patterns really look like. (FWIW, the hook I was tying on was a #12 TMC 200r...a little small probably for the "two hackle treatment, but hopefully it conveys the idea.)

We were there for a Sat. session he did at the CFFC&M a few years back.........got to watch him tye for 3 hours. We probably have drawings and recipes from that day here in the stash. We've spent hundreds of those Sat's. there, and have drawings and recipes from most all of them...............i would always do the recipes, and Misa would do the drawings.........we've got prolly a half dozen or so binders full. We started in the early to mid 90's.....and still do it when we can be there..........but got almost every Sat. from when we started til say into '08, and occassionally or periodically since. It's an amazing stash. Got another one just recently in May when we were there.....couple different tyers that day actualy, because it was the center's annual big hooplah Sat......Ted Patlen (for the 20th time, lol.....somethin' like that) and Lee Weil.

That top fly just blew me away. Gorgeous...the colors are magnificent.
