Re: Dubbing blends for Leisenring/Hidy style flymphs?
i bought my Skunk tails at an Indian Pow Wow in West Yellowstone in 2004.....got 10 of them for $15. Have since given away bout half of them. Sorry, no more to let go of...........got my Skunk skins (full pelts), here at the local antique tackle shop.....$20. each. Spent $60, got three. They're gorgeous and huge. Bob, if i see i can spare a chunck, you got it. Btw, the husband and wife team you refered to, who were in "West"......they gave me a collection of their flies (we swaped), includng the one's he was tyin' with Skunk. Very nice folks.....
hank, you make a good three card molly player............. ......... ..........you ever end up destitute (God forbid)............
Jon, Snowshoe is OUTTA THIS WORLD.......if i had to choose one over the other (CDC or Snowshow), for Emerger wings OR dubbing.......boy, that'd be hard. i've never used Pig's Woll yet........can't wait. Seen lots of flies tyed with it and it's beautiful stuff.

If you're working on the "cheap", lake a look at the another page, there at the site Ray noted!
"Parts of hides" are far cheaper!

I have used such "parts" as it allows you to buy several colors for mixing!

We just got a pretty nice (stuffed full), bag of dog dubbing (underfur of a Newfoundland), from a member of Misa's club.....World Fly Fishing of Japan. This guy acted as captain this year (to give Misa break), at the America Cup gig in Colorado. His dog fur is really nice stuff. He says it's full of lanolin and floats like a cork.....i'll let you know. If anyone wants a small baggie sample of it.....lemme know.....and i can always get you more. Jim says he combs/brushes out this same amount weekly.....dog is a damn machine. It's pure black, very soft, and a bit like wool.

Does anybody besides me sometimes use Whitlock's SLF dubbing for these?

Actually Davy Wotton is the guy who invented SLF.....a few years back he sold the company to Wapsi. i've been a huge fan of SLF for years.....although i now like Arizona dubbings much better. The "blends" are so nice and the fibers are so long.....it's just amazing stuff. i sill use SLF (and many other brands of dubbing), mostly for donation, swap/give away, or inexpensively priced flies, etc. The Arizona is saved for very special projects. Both companies have a large variety of different dubbings. One of the SLF's that is very nice is their Saltwater line.........but i find i almost always have to blend my SLF.....two/three or even four colors together, to get what i'm after. And while i often do that with the Arizona as well.....it isn't nessessary, as most all the colors (as are) already are, such nice "blends."

I tied up some of Ray's Rio Grand King's tonight (dubbing brush is Gutermann's teal silk with about a 50/50 blend of dark brown possum and the Kaufmann's SLF "stonefly black").
FWIW, for somebody with predilection for natural materials, I'm really digging the SLF--with the possum it makes a really soft, well-behaved dubbing.
