Grip hook shank length

Post by jcrumbacher » Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:03 pm

I was wondering about the shank length on the Grip 14732BL and 14703 hooks. They are listed as short shank hooks. I was wondering if they are 1x short, 2x short, etc?

Also, as a side note, when tying on short shank hooks (be they the grip or the Daiichi 1640), can one get away with using a larger hook size (for instance a #10) to tye a #14 body on 2x short hook since the #10 has the same shank length as a standard #14? I'm asking because i like tying on slightly larger hooks (ie: 8, 10, 12) because I have poorer vision up close, and smaller shank hooks (standard 16, 18, 20, etc) tend to go blurry for me when tying.

Thanks,
Jay

Thanks for the info Mike.

I think I'm going to give both the 1640 and the Grip a whirl and see what I can come up with.

Thanks,
Jay

The 14703 appears to be 2x short. A bit hard for me to compare, because I don't have any other hooks of that size with a comparable bend. However, the straight part of the shank is shorter than on a Daiichi 1530, which is 1x short; equal to a Mustad R48, which is 2x short; and longer than a Daiichi 1510, which is 3x short. The overall length of the hook is about the same as the 1530, though. (All based on size 14 hooks)

Jay,

From the Grip company owner this reply back to you:

These hooks (14703 and 14723BL) are 1x short. It appear shorter than 1x because of the bend of
the hook.
