If you use a flat head screw or even a hex head screw in the right diameter, then this adds some weight which can be advantageous, and you can also lock the spool in the holder by mounting it on the bolt. I did turn up a few of these for myself and a few other people, but when I moved house they disappeared, probably in a drawer that was mistakenly dumped in the rubbish. Anyway, you should get the idea I think. The screw has to be long enough so that the nut is still "hollow" at one side, and you can quickly round off this hollow, and on the hex head screw using a drill bit or countersink, so that the hollows are "round" and they fit your holder and move properly.

Something like this;

But you can use more or less any round head screw as well. I got some nice stainless steel types and turned them up on a lathe, But I no longer have any machine tools. You can do it easily by hand though with an electric drill and some files.
