Hi Ron,
The Madison cabbage fly, we have some large browns up here and I would like to run it past them. I've found when looking at different videos of soft hackle flies some guys will use a wet fly hook, another will use a dry fly hook, while others will use a nymph hook. Because these are wet flies I have been using a wet fly hook like the Mustad 3606. I try to follow the recipe as closely as possible which is why I'm hoping some kind soul will provide it to me. Thank you.

Hey, Tim. I've been tying the Madison Cabbage on Mustad 3906 along with TMC 206BL, in sizes 12 and 14, though though a 10 would probably work as well. The tail loops are important, not having them reduces the flies effectiveness. I use black thread, but it's really tier's choice, the tail loops are pearl Flash-A-Bou or Krystal Flash, but the crinkly stuff gets my vote, fish don't seem to care. Dubbing is Ice Dub Purple, I may give it a try with some UV Ice Dub in the mix. Hackle is black hen, I usually tie it with fairly long hackle barbs. Once the rivers drop back into shape here, I'll be throwing it at some local Brookies.

Thank you Ron, I appreciate the explanation. Monday I'm picking up some purple Ice dubbing along with purple floss to give it a try. I've heard purple is a good colour for Atlantic salmon so I will give them a go as well. Thank you again.

Tim, I checked my supply closet and the Dubbing IS Purple UV Ice Dub.

Tim, I would never tell anyone what the best dubbing for any pattern is, but for a super tight body, try Senso Laser Dubbing. Fun stuff to work with especially for small patterns. It is not the right material for a buggy effect, but has a place in my purple army.

The stuff out there is for your enjoyment. Not your stress. Do not sweat the small stuff here. It's not worth it.
