up eye wet fly hooks source

Post by driftless » Tue Jul 30, 2019 10:37 am

Hi folks,

I've been speeding up & down the web looking for Mustad 94842 or other up eye wet fly hooks.

Would someone point me in the right direction, please?

Please pm if necessary.

Thanks,

Paul

I believe the 98482 hooks have been discontinued and the pipeline has dried up. I was after some 6 months ago and all I could find were in private hands. Some on this board suggested good substitutes of current manufacture.

Well, that is the old number for a standard Dry fly hook (almost exactly the same as #94840, up instead of down) and not my most likely choice for a wet fly, but they are listed on ebay from Norway and the new number would be R50U-94842 which is "out of stock" at the usual places, but is the number I'd search for. Some sources list Daiichi 1330 as equivalent. You might get more results searching Turned Up Eye Dry Fly Hooks, if you want something close.
The most commonly called for wet fly hook when I started tying I believe would have been the Mustad #3906 or #3906B (longer) with extra heavy wire, down eye; very close to Daiichi 1550 & 1560, I think.
Unless you tie on with a Turle knot, I can't see any advantage to up or down eye and I always seek straight eye hooks.
