Thanks friends for your comments! You all sure know how to humble a person.

I don't tie many flies, about fifteen I'd say, and that's including dries and nymphs. But now being a member here, I have seen some flies tied by some of you that I am really intrigued on learning how to tie, so maybe I'll get more flies under my wing.

There's an old saying that you should never mess with a man that only owns one gun. Chances are he knows how to use it. Same could be said for a guy who only ties 15 flies. Bet he knows how to catch fish with them.

A excellent fly. Davie McPhail has a YouTube video where he shows how to tie this fly. He twists the feather and tying thread together to make a much stronger fly.

That's how Stewart tied it.

I view a "Stewart spider" as being defined by a feather twisted around the thread and semi-palmered. Anything else isn't.

Also, there was a comment above about Stewart swinging spider. Stewart is mostly known today, outside of a few of us wet fly fanatics, as the first person to strongly advocate (in print) for fishing dead drift upstream, paving the way for dry flies. He didn't swing flies.

Of course, swinging his spiders works just fine too.

It's Davie's method that I followed. I have learned to tie most of my flies watching his videos.

fishnkilts - that is a very accurate depiction of the original pattern, as described and tied by Stewart. This is also one of my favorite patterns..... its "mustard" according to Ollie Edwards in his video. For those of you who have not seen it, should.
One point: the more scraggly this pattern gets the better it fishes.
Well done!
