A beautiful fly, I started to match the McKenzie hatch years ago while at the NW Fly Tyers Expo in Eugene with Hafele's March Brown Flymph. ;)

Gee whiz, that’s superb. The coloration and profile are so nice.

What make/model hook did you use?

Vroom vroom! ;)

Thanks John. I was guessing it was a Mustad 3906B. Glad I asked.

Ray - Guessing type and size of each hook is creeping towards the hook sickness......

John,
I use March Brown patterns similar to yours (but, not near as nice looking!) on my locals not only in early June but, all year long! It seems to be accepted not matter what the time of year! I think that's a great feature!
Your pattern John is very "buggy" looking! A quality that I have noticed in all of the great tiers both from the past and the present! Therefore, you are a great tier!
What other goodies do you have for us?
From the Den,
Doug

ForumGhillie wrote: Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:13 pm One of my favorite patterns to tie, the March Brown Spider. I started tying them when I was about 14 years old when I found it in Al McClane's Standard Fishing Encyclopedia,

Simple pattern to tie:
Thread: Brown
Tail: Woodduck fibers
Body: Hare's Ear Mask
Rib: Gold French oval tinsel
Collar: Partridge

In early June, throw them a March Brown spider and hold on!!
Thanks for posting, awesome tie! Another spider to put into my arsenal

Back in the late '80s my Dad gave me his copy of McClane's Standard Fishing Encyclopedia. I wasn't into flyfishing then. Gonna have to get it out and look thru it again.

Greg, that pattern or similar has worked nicely in late may and June on the South Branch. Tie it a little larger and it works well for a hex pattern later in June as well.
