Cal Bird's birds nest

Image 2 & 3 though show tail and legs/hackle which does not look to be lemon woodduck at all, more like grouse,

I thought the same, except that it looks like English red grouse, which was not a common tying material in the states. Maybe bronze mallard?

Also, I just had confirmed by my contact who has eight of these original nymphs that the legs/hackle goes 360, not two distinct bunches.

I glad you confirmed that. I was hard to tell from some of the pictures.

It is not bronze mallard. That much I can tell/see.

A quote from Ralph Cutters book Fish Food Chapter 6 'Trout Don't care if the Wrong colors are there as long as the right colors are present.' I interpret this to mean if you can find the proper trigger for the predation reaction that is what will bring the fish to the fly.

Cal insisted the bug be tied with a blend of Australian possum and coyote dyed with his own secret formulas, which usually consisted of onion skin, coffee grounds, handsome sort of explosive such as gunpowder or picric acid. The one aspect we both agreed upon is that a proper birds nest should be tied with wood-duck flank rather than the soft and limp feathers of mallard or teal.

I used the male side of velcro to rough up the fly.

Cleaned up with the birds nest today on the Kern River. Picked up 4 fish at 14"and 2 at 16" 1 @ 6"... my favorite. Had it on a czech system in fast water using desiccant. Thanks again for all the imput.

I tied a few variations with an ostrich thorax. If I get a chance I will try them Sunday.
