Greenwell's Spider

Greenwell's Spider
Kamasan B405 #14, Pearsall's yellow, waxed, Greenwell's genetic hen hackle, stripped one side.
Tied a few of these for the first time this morning, and fished one for the first time this dinner, and | can see where it gets its reputation from! Caught well. Fished it on the point upstream, with a William's Favourite on a single dropper which didn't pick up anything at all. Some olives coming off, but not many. As usual, mostly midge!

Whew, great looking fly. Is the ribbing silk just overwrapped?

Very tight tie. Beautiful. You did a wonderful job of capturing the color in the photo as well.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

Hi, sorry - it is fine gold wire, the ribbing - forgot to mention that!narcodog wrote:Whew, great looking fly. Is the ribbing silk just overwrapped?
thanks Old hat -
it is brilliant to tie these old patterns, chuck them in, and then in no time feel a fish on the end! Very special.

Very nice tie Andrew.
I prefer mine the way Edmonds & Lee state in their book which has split wings of Starling. In this guise the Greenwell's is one of my most deadliest patterns.

Wings, I am moving on to - confession time - I have never tied a wet winged fly - or not with slips anyway. There, I've said it now.

PM Coming your way Andrew
Re: Greenwell's Spider
What a superb fish-catching fly this is!!
I've fished it on the point a good few times now, again today, and it hasn't let me down yet. This has been my most consistent 'classic' by far...
