Playing with a beautiful rusty dun hackle I recently got from Jim S.

Hook: Mustad 3121
Thread: Griffith's 14/0 dun
Tail: Coq de Leon fibers
Rib: x-fine Lagarten gold tinsel
Body: mix of dun and rust hare's ear
Hackle: rusty dun hen wrapped open through thorax

Just lovely. Delicate and sparse, just the way the fish and I like them. Is that a rusty dun or a honey dun that you got from Jim? No matter, it's a winning hackle.

Is it one of the JimCo brand hen necks? I'd be curious to know the specifics on the hackle.

Mark - I like the hooks as well. Found a lot of them in great shape.

Ray - Yes the hackle I got from JimsCo. It is listed as a Herbert Miner genetic hen cape (rusty natural dun). The tips show a little lighter in the photo as they capture the light well. Probably why they they look Honey "dunnish"

This up-turned eye thing - is it an American thing?

I've read a few of you commenting that the flies look like they are swimming up - not a bad look for an emerger. It is certainly true in the vice... I'm trying to decide whether it would seem this way in the water or if it is just wishful thinking!

There is some discussion on eye position and how a fly drifts according, I think this also depends on the knot one uses to attach tippet to the eye. I have not found any significant difference in catch in my experience. At least not with smaller flies. Hidy, who coined the term "flymph" preferred up eye hooks. As far as it looking like an emerger, probably more to the human eye than to the fish's. There may be something to the overall profile...but who knows?
