Partridge and Orange (Tenkara Style)

Just a simple variation of the traditional Partridge and Orange pattern. I have tried to tye these tenkara style, with the hackle swept out over the eye of the hook. One version has a plain silk abdomen, the abdomen of the second version has been very light touch-dubbed with hares ear dubbing. The hackle fibers are forced forwards by the thorax dubbing. I formed a small silk thread ball behind the eye of the hook, which holds the fibers out in a cone. I hope the combination of thread-ball & dubbing-thorax should hold the fibers in place when the flies are fished.

Yes, if you look at a current weather map you will see that there is a strong band of lake-effect snow going over our area. There are still folks trapped in their car this evening. The Thruway Authority shut down a portion of the NY Thruway (I-90) due to the snow. Unfortunately there are a lot of motorists stuck on the road. Some have been there for over 24 hours, stuck in their cars. My kids school was canceled today and I decided to work from home (benefit of laptop and internet). Some areas have gotten 3 feet of snow in the last 24 hrs. My town only got about 16 inches, but the lake-effect snow band is supposed to pass over us again this evening. It's funny how localized these bands of snow are. In some areas north of the city (Buffalo), they hardly have a dusting. Whole different story for the southtowns though...

Mark - Your little coffee stirrer trick works great on these flies. I was having trouble with keeping the hackle fibers out of the way during the tying process, but then remembered seeing you use a short section of coffee stirrer as a tool to hold the fibers back. I quickly made up a couple and slipped them over the end of my silk bobbin. Once the hackle is wrapped, I slip the plastic ring as far onto the hook shank as I can and pull the hackle fibers back through the center. Then slide the ring towards the eye of the hook and it keeps the fibers out of the way while forming the abdomen and thorax. Handy little trick/tool.

That's a beautiful very classicly styled Tenkara fly of a sort.....MORE than a "sort".....a "letumgo" original. Dr. Ishigaki would be proud. Misa loves it.
