Nemes' Heron Tups

Post by Old Hat » Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:17 pm

I found this pattern described by Nemes in "The Soft Hackled Fly Addict" He describes it as the largest soft hackle he ever tied. It was tied as a steelhead fly for a friend.

Nemes says tie it just like a Tups on a low water salmon hook and with 2 turns of heron hackle. Here's my version since I don't have any Tups walking around or heron.

Faux Tups (light red fine muskrat and wool mix, cream simi seal, red wool, urine stained colored wool  )

I use blue eared pheasant for the hackle.

Forgot to mention that there are also some other super secret ingredients in the tups mixture but I won't let any body know what they are until a few years after my death.

WOW! that's WAY Cool...........the thorax looks identical to the ones i did for the Nemes swap flies. i used curved numph hooks, and Hungarian Partridge w/ Pheasent tail abdomens..........but i LOVE that fly you tyed there. Your hackling is great! What did you use for the abdomen? Pearsalls........? Almost looks like a quill..... :D Great fly Carl. ;)

I just read that section of his book last evening. I love seeing his description become visible. Beautiful fly Carl & a lovely tribute to Mr. Nemes.

I'm thinking that Syl would heartily approve; given the limitations of materials availability, this is a remarkable rendition.

I, too, read that in his book. Thanks for bringing it to life. Cool looking fly.
