Carl - I am working with 8/0 UNI-Thread (72 denier). Yes, the herl is wrapped around three strands of thread (two from the dubbing loop and one from the main tying thread). It is important to use a finer thread diameter when working with flies smaller than say a size 14. I have some 10/0 Gudebrod thread (45 denier) which also works nicely on very small flies. Too bad Gudebrod stopped selling the stuff. I bought a full set of the thread from Chris Helms. When Gudebrod stopped making the stuff, he bought up all the remaining stock.

Helpful Thread Reference: https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http ... .pdf&pli=1
Download Chris Helms catalog (pages 20 & 21). This is THE best comparative thread summary I have ever found. Well worth printing out an laminating for a desk reference.

Ray, Gudebrod got out of the manufacturing of any and all fly tying materials bout 5 years ago......somewhere right around there. A good friend of ours Fred Dupre, a very fine tyer who lives in the Fort Worth part of Texas use to be a rep. for them, and he gave us a box of that 10/0 stuff a few years ago. It's great stuff. It was all the same color (Olive), so i gave bout half of it away, but i still have some. They use to make this great stuff which was like dubbing on a string, and came wraped around a card. i still have some of that in a few colors. It's great stuff for doin' bodies fast. Some of their braids were pretty nice too. You'll meet Fred when you come down to do the "Bug." He can tell you all about what went down with the company. Shame they hadda fold it up. They made some cool things. ;)
i figured Chris would have sold Whitetail by now.......seems like it's been 3 or 4 years now that he's been lookin' to do that. Did he decide to keep the company?
